A root for the heat
When the heat sits heavy, a deep pink drink shows up at roadside stalls across South India.
It is made from nannari, a root that Ayurveda and Siddha have long held to be cooling. Some people find a chilled glass takes the edge off a hot afternoon.
What would a glass of this do for your afternoon?
What you'll need
- 2 tbsp nannari syrup
- 1 glass cold water
- A squeeze of lime
- 1 tsp sabja seeds, soaked (optional)
Method
Stir the nannari syrup into the cold water until the colour spreads.
Squeeze in the lime, add the sabja seeds if using, and drop in some ice.
Sip it slow through the hottest part of the day.
Give it a week of hot afternoons, and notice whether a glass shifts how heavy the heat feels, and whether it settles you differently each day.
