Moves A steady seat

A steady seat

Share

We treat a chair as the natural place to sit. For most of the world, and most of history, it was the floor.

In yoga, a simple cross-legged seat is the base for everything, the body steady, the spine holding itself. Some people find that just sitting this way, and letting the body settle, quietens the rest.

What settles when you sit this way?

What you'll need

  • A patch of floor, a cushion if you like
  • A few quiet minutes

Method

Sit cross-legged on the floor, a cushion under you if it eases the knees, spine easy and upright.

Let the body settle onto its base, and feel where the weight rests, the legs, the sit bones, the spine balancing above.

Sit a few minutes a day for a week, and notice how the body settles into the seat, and whether it comes easier as the days go on.
