Chairs and sofas keep the body at one height all day. The floor asks more of it.

Getting down and back up uses strength, balance, and flexibility together. Some research suggests how easily people sit and rise from the floor may track with long-term health. It's a skill that keeps, if you use it.

How easily would yours come back up?

What you'll need

  • A bit of clear floor
  • Some of your sitting time spent lower down

Method

Spend some of your sitting time on the floor — cross-legged, kneeling, or squatting. Change position when you stiffen.

When you get up, use as little help from your hands as feels safe.

Give it a week or two, and notice how easily you get down and up, and whether it loosens as you go.
