Where your food grew
A field, a tree, the sea, near or far. We rarely think about where our food grew.
Some of it travelled a long way to reach you. Some grew close by, in season, and often arrives fresher for it. In older cultures, food is seen as a tie to the land it came from.
How far did today's plate travel?
What you'll need
- A meal in front of you
- The labels, or a good guess
Method
Before you eat, pick one thing on the plate.
Find out where it grew, from the label, a quick search, or your best guess.
Picture the journey, the soil, the season, the distance to you.
Try it with a few meals over a week, and notice where your food tends to come from, and whether knowing changes what you reach for.
